External timber is everywhere in fencing, cladding and garden structures, and most of it fails the same way: it greys, cracks, soaks up water and slowly rots. Our working thesis is that a water based graphene treatment can penetrate and reinforce the timber from within, rather than forming a film on top that later peels.
The result behaves less like a coated surface and more like upgraded timber: harder wearing, better at shedding water and more resistant to decay, while keeping the natural grain and feel of the wood. The commercial value leads (longer service life, lower maintenance, fewer replacements) and the environmental value follows from the same durability.
The same core process works across a wide family of natural and porous materials. External timber is the lead application; from there the platform extends across reed, straw, fibre and other abundant, low cost substrates.
Patents pending, UK applications filed 2026
Two UK patent applications were filed in June 2026, covering the core treatment process for natural fibrous and lignocellulosic materials and the application equipment that delivers it, from handheld sprayers to industrial immersion systems.
Atomic Resins has developed a water based acrylic polymer graphene treatment system engineered specifically for natural fibrous materials.
Unlike a surface coating that sits on top, the treatment is designed to enter the fibre, reinforcing the material from within rather than forming a film over it.
Treated material behaves more like an upgraded natural composite than a coated one: tougher, more cohesive and more durable, while remaining flexible.
In a thatched roof, breathability comes from the air between the individual stems of reed, not from the reed itself. Treating each stem improves the material while leaving that natural airflow between stems intact.

Graphene is not one material. Platelet size, layer count, morphology and dispersion format all vary between grades, and each behaves differently in a given binder system and substrate. Atomic Resins sources graphene from two verified manufacturers and selects the grade whose characteristics best suit each product, rather than forcing a single material across the whole range.

The base business case is product performance: materials that last longer, shed water better and cost less to maintain. That same durability creates a second order environmental case, one Atomic Resins intends to evidence properly before claiming. No certified carbon credits are sold today, and none are assumed in the base model.
Treated natural materials are being developed toward significantly longer service life, with a 35+ year validation target for flagship treated water reed, where technically achievable.
Reed, straw, hemp, jute, bamboo, timber fibre, paper and card already contain atmospheric carbon captured by plants. Extending their useful life keeps that carbon stored in useful products for longer.
Longer lasting materials may reduce new material demand, transport, labour, waste and disposal impacts across the lifetime of a building or product.
At industrial scale, low grade waste heat (including from data centres) may be used for drying and curing treated materials, displacing part of the fossil heat demand.
Atomic Resins intends to build the evidence base for life cycle assessment, environmental product declarations, chain of custody records and future product carbon storage evaluation.
Carbon value is treated strictly as upside. Formal environmental claims will only be made once independently validated: durability data first, LCA and verification second.
Atomic Resins Ltd is the UK company at the centre of the project: the intellectual property holder, R&D lead, brand owner and the company that interfaces with investors, customers and partners.
Formulations, trade secrets and the core technology are held and protected here, providing a controlled foundation as the platform scales.
Atomic Resins is grounded in real craft and hands on experimentation, not theory alone. Graphene treated reed is not a concept; physical samples have been made, dried, weathered and handled.
The approach is methodical and practical: small batches, field trials, photographs, observation logs, weight uptake, drying behaviour, water behaviour and flex / tear testing.
A monumental thatched figure raised at Glastonbury Festival in 2023: a joint project with my father, David Lomax, hand dressed in combed wheat over a sculpted armature. David brings deep experience in life size sculpture, including a life size bronze African bull elephant, and that command of form and structure shaped the build.
